CHRISTMAS EVE COMMUNION SERVICE

Preakness Reformed Church

Wayne, New Jersey

December 24, 2018   11:00 p.m.

Welcome to Preakness Reformed Church!

"Who among us will celebrate Christmas correctly? Whoever finally lays down all power, all honor, all reputation, all vanity, all arrogance, all individualism beside the manger; whoever remains lowly and lets God alone be high; whoever looks at the child in the manger and sees the glory of God precisely in lowliness.” –Dietrich Bonhoeffer, God Is In the Manger

LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE

Tonight, we hear the good news of great joy; for to us is born in the city of David

a Savior, who is Christ the Lord!

Jesus has arrived in grace and mystery, renewing faded hopes and announcing peace

to a weary world.

Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom God

favors!

Jesus comes among us in power and glory inspiring fresh Christmas joy and calling us to lives that are full of God’s love.

Jesus, the light of the world, is born.

Let Christ’s light shine in the darkest corners of our lives. Let Christ’s light shine in the darkest corners of the world. God is with us.

      Prayer of Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you!

And also with you!

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is truly right to give our thanks and praise.

With joy we praise you, gracious God, for you have created heaven and earth, made us in your image, and kept covenant with us--even when we fell into sin.  We give you thanks for Jesus Christ, our Lord, who came among us as the Word made flesh to show us your glory, full of grace and truth. Therefore, we join our voices with all the saints and angels and the whole creation to proclaim the glory of your name by singing together…

Angels from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o'er all the earth;

Ye who sang creation's story Now proclaim Messiah's birth:

Come and worship, come and worship,
Worship Christ, the new-born King!

Tonight we also remember in this Supper, that Jesus Christ was the perfect sacrifice offered once on the cross for the sin of the whole world. In the joy of his birth, resurrection, and ascension, we sing together…

Shepherds in the fields abiding, Watching o'er your flocks by night,

God with us is now residing, Yonder shines the infant light:

Come and worship, come and worship,
Worship Christ, the new-born King!

Lord, our God, send your Holy Spirit so that this bread and cup may be for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. May we and all your saints be united with Christ and remain faithful in hope and love this Christmas Season...

All creation join in praising, God the Father, Spirit, Son,

Evermore your voices raising, To the eternal Three in One:

Come and worship, come and worship,
Worship Christ, the new-born King!
