Welcome to the Preakness Reformed Church!

“Note that Jesus doesn’t merely call upon the man to renounce his possessions but to give what he has to the poor. Wealth, which is the major factor that separates the rich from the poor, is presented to the man as a means of connection with the poor.” – William H. Willimon

The Kingdom of God is near.

We desire and long to enter this kingdom.

Today the mercy of God is made known.

We want to receive this mercy.

The grace of God is abundant for all.

We praise God, for God is full of compassion and love. May God accept our grateful praise as we come to worship today!

Prayer OF CONFESSION

Lord, we look for you in the wrong places. We put our trust in material things. We worry about things we cannot change. Forgive us for all the ways we have neglected your Word and ignored your people. Do not be far from us, Lord. Move us to turn to you for help…

(continue with silent prayers of confession)

The Peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you!

(Please greet one another with the peace of Christ.)

COMMUNITY CONCERNS: The Responsibility of Wealth

Litany: “Our World Belongs to God: 10 & 48”

Made in God’s image to live in loving communion with our Maker, we are appointed earth-keepers and caretakers to tend the earth, enjoy it, and love our neighbors. God uses our skills for the unfolding and well-being of this world so that creation and all who live in it may flourish.

Our work is a calling from God. We work for more than wages and manage for more than profit so that mutual respect and the just use of goods and skills may shape the workplace. While we earn or profit, we love our neighbors by providing useful products and services. In our global economy we advocate meaningful work and fair wages for all. Out of the Lord’s generosity to us, we give freely and gladly of our money and time.

Prayers OF THE PEOPLE       …concluding with “Sweet are the Prayers of a Friend”

                (Choir Singing)

Sweet are the prayers of a friend.

How sweet are the prayers that are offered up by a friend,

By a friend who calls, calling up to heav'n,

Calling, "Lord, come down, come down and bless again."

Friends pray for healing; they pray revealing the heavy burdens of our souls.

They pray for courage, unfailing courage, asking God to make us whole.

Friends pray us through troubles, through all our struggles when life seems to fall apart.

They pray us through grieving, always believing, Our God can heal the broken heart.

How sweet are the prayers that are offered up by a friend,

By a friend who calls, calling up to heav'n,

Calling, "Lord, come down, come down and bless again."

Sweet are the prayers of a friend for a friend.
