PREAKNESS REFORMED CHURCH

WAYNE, NEW JERSEY

FIRST SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY

JANUARY 13, 2019   10:00 A.M.

Welcome to the Preakness Reformed Church!

“We spend a lot of time in the Christian church talking about God’s love for sinners, but we sure do go to a lot of trouble not to be mistaken for one of them. Only Jesus – our leader and our Lord – did not seem too concerned about that. In Jesus, God’s being-with-us included God’s being in the river with us, in the flesh with us, in the sorrow of repentance and the joy of new life with us.”

                                                                -Barbara Brown Taylor

  • GATHERING IN THE LIGHT OF GOD

God is with us today and always. We are marked as God’s beloved ones and God calls each one of us by name.

What have we done to deserve God’s love?

God’s love is God’s gift to us, always and forever. God’s love never fades.

Even when we are difficult and turn away from God?

God is ever faithful to us. God heals us, continues to call us and makes us disciples of Christ.

God has entrusted us with God’s own message of hope. The light of God shines on us and the Spirit of God rests upon us.

May the Holy Spirit guide our worship today!

Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name and what our hearts can no longer bear. Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open us to a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image…

  • The Apostles’ Creed and Congregational Vows

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

He descended to the dead.

On the third day He rose again;

He ascended into heaven,

He is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Beloved in the Lord Jesus Christ,

do you receive in the name of the Lord,

Brandon DeLeonardo, Robert Janney, Holly Ryan and Ken Tanis

as duly elected and ordained servants of Christ?

We do.

Do you promise to respect them

for the sake of the offices

for which they have been chosen and ordained?

We do.

Do you promise to encourage and pray for them,

to labor together in obedience to the gospel

for the unity, purity, and peace of the church,

the welfare of the whole world, and

the honor of our Lord Jesus Christ?

We do.

Beloved people of God, please

receive Brandon, Robert, Holly and Ken as Christ’s own servants.

Support them in love, that their work may bear fruit.

In the name and by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ,

We declare that this sister and these brothers

are duly installed as deacons and an elder in this church.

Thanks be to God! Amen!
