PREAKNESS REFORMED CHURCH

WAYNE, NEW JERSEY

FIRST SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS DAY

DECEMBER 30, 2018   10:00 A.M.

Welcome to the Preakness Reformed Church!

“What keeps the wild hope of Christmas alive year after year in a world notorious for dashing all hopes is the haunting dream that the child who was born that day may yet be born again even in us.

The Incarnation is a kind of vast joke whereby the Creator of the ends of the earth comes among us in diapers… Until we too have taken the idea of the God-man seriously enough to be scandalized by it, we have not taken it as seriously as it demands to be taken.”                         Frederick Buechner, Faces of Jesus

OUR APPROACH TO GOD

      PRELUDE                Light of the World

      WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • GATHERING IN THE LIGHT OF GOD

In the beginning was the YES!

Before time-space, the YES was there;

            without it no thing existed or ever could become.

          YES was the source of all things and brought light and life to earth.

          And this YES became a mortal human being ---

          dear to God’s heart AND yet truly one with us.

          Oh, invisible YES, now we see you in Jesus!

            Though intangible, now we touch you and live!

            In the darkness the light of God’s YES always shines…outflanking fear.

            God’s YES! is full of grace and truth.                                               Ó B D Prewer 1991, adapted

          And from his fullness, we have all received grace upon grace.

          Noone has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God

          and is in closest relationship with God, he has made God known to us.             John 1: 18

PRAYER OF CONFESSON

      Ever faithful God, with one another, we admit to you that we are beings

      in whom light and darkness are uncomfortably mixed.

      We are beings of cleverness yet foolishness, faith yet much unrest,

      strength yet frailty, compassion yet self -interest.

      We want to be close to you yet we ignore you, we praise you yet defy you,

      we serve you yet evade you, we love you yet avoid you.

      Lord our God, you are faithful in all the ages and stages of our lives.

      Through your grace, show us your kindness;

      let the light Christ grow brighter in our hearts and in our lives

      as your face shine upon us day by day.

                                       (silent prayers of confession)

The Unbelievable                                             Steve & Vikki Cook

Verse:

Come and see the inconceivable

And believe the unbelievable:

God has come to dwell with us.

Begotten Son born into Adam's earth,

Promised One fulfilling ancient words,

God has come to dwell with us.

Bridge:

Who could ever know the depths

Of the myst'ry of Your grace?

Though our minds can't take it in,

Lord, our hearts are filled with praise.

Verse:

He will heal the unhealable,

He will save the unsavable:

God has come to dwell with us.

Heaven's joy will drink our bitter cup,

Emptied out as He is lifted up;

God has come to dwell with us.

Bridge:

Who could ever know the depths

Of the myst'ry of Your grace?

Though our minds can't take it in,

Lord, our hearts are filled with praise.

Verse:

Lord, we're lost in overwhelming awe

At the thought of such amazing love;

Coda:

God has come,

God has come,

God has come to dwell with us.
