June 17, 2018    10:00 A.M.

Welcome to the Preakness Reformed Church!

“God gets into sermons and makes our words mean more than we can say. By God’s grace, preaching is fecund, fruitful. God comes and works our merely human words into God’s Word addressed to God’s people.”   - Richard Lischer

  • CALL TO WORSHIP                         -sentences from Psalm 92

It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to the name of the Lord.

It is good to declare God’s steadfast love in the morning and God’s faithfulness at night!

For the Lord has made me glad by his works; at the works of God’s hands I sing for joy!

How great are the works of the Lord!

The righteousness flourish like the Palm tree, and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the Lord; they flourish in the courts of our God.

In old age they still produce fruit; they are always green and full of life, showing that the Lord is upright; God is our rock and righteousness.

  • HYMN of PRAISE 538 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty    NICAEA
  • salutation

Holy God, you can call us to live in mystery, to walk by faith.

Yet we long for plans with goals and schedules. It’s hard to live by faith.

You call us to place our trust in you, to live according to your direction.

Yet we want life to make sense from a human point of view. It’s hard to live by faith.

You call us to feel the mystery of life, to marvel at the power of your love.

Yet it’s not easy to accept your promise that everything old has passed away.

It’s hard to live by faith.

Forgive us, holy creator of reality.

Forgive us for playing god instead of accepting our humanity…

(silent prayers of confession)

The peace of Christ by with you.

And also with you!

(Please greet one another with the peace of Christ.)

(Children will remain in the sanctuary for worship.)

Prayers of THANKSGIVING AND INTERCESSION      …ending with The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,

on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.

And lead us not into temptation,

For thine is the kingdom,

THE PRESENTATION OF PRC SCHOLARSHIPS                   Joan Vanderbush

Today for the 25th year in a row, we celebrate Scholarship Sunday, specifically those students who are continuing their education beyond high school and beyond college.  Please enjoy the 25th Anniversary Booklet with its brief history of our first quarter century.  If you have family members who might enjoy seeing it, there are extras in the front window.  Thank you to Keri Vion for her expertise in assembling the booklet.

The multi-colored envelopes in the pews are for donations to the PRC Scholarship Fund in honor of 25 years of support for our students.  Please consider making a special donation on this occasion.   In the windows are copies of the PRC History – the first volume was written by Dominie George Labaw, a 38-year pastor of PRC.  The second volume was written by the Rev. Albert Smith to bring it up to date to 1990.  They are a history of Wayne as well as of PRC.  The cost is $25 for the 2-volume set and the proceeds go to the Scholarship Fund.  In the front window, are the unwrapped 2 volumes for your perusal.

Following the service, please stop in the parlor to greet our awardees and to enjoy the delicious desserts provided by Lois Bender.
