PREAKNESS REFORMED CHURCH
WAYNE, NEW JERSEY
THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY
JANUARY 27, 2019 10:00 A.M.
Welcome to the Preakness Reformed Church!
“C.S. Lewis enjoyed pondering...what Jesus did at Cana (as in many of his miracles)
was really no more than a speeded-up version of what he does every year on a thousand hillsides as vines silently turn water from rainfall into wine. Millions of people enjoy that wine every year without a moment recognizing the divine origin of it all.”
“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”

RINGING OF THE BELL
INTROIT Arise, Your Light is Come FESTAL SONG, William Walter, 1894
- GATHERING IN THE LIGHT OF GOD Psalm 36 and 1 Corinthians 12, selected verses
This morning, we dwell with one another in the house of our bountiful God.
God’s love is meteoric, God’s faithfulness astronomic, God’s purpose titanic!
Yet in the largeness of the Lord, nothing gets lost;
Not an atom, not a man or a woman or a mouse slips through the cracks.
Welcome in the name of the Christ who does nothing by half measures.
How exquisite your love, O God!
How eager we are to run under your wings,
to eat our fill at the banquet you spread
as you fill our tankards with Eden spring water.
You are a fountain of cascading light, and you open our eyes to light.
Let us open our hearts to the energy of the Holy Spirit!
All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people!
Each of us is now a part of Christ’s resurrection body,
refreshed and sustained at one fountain - his Spirit ---
where we all come to drink.
- OPENING HYMN 521 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing NETTLETON
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
as we look at our lives and as we look at our choices,
we confess that sometimes we have opted for
those things that rob us, and those around us, of generosity and joy.
Whenever we have watered down our Christianity into dull routines and platitudes,
without zest and laughter; embolden us.
Whenever we have traded the new wine of the Gospel
for the old beverage of religious laws, anxiety, and belittling ourselves or others;
fill us and carbonate our spirits with your Spirit.
O dearest Christ, Brother and Saviour,
your love enfolds us long before we become aware of it.
Forgive us; transform our hearts with joy that no doubt, failure or fear can steal from us.
Rekindle the wealth of the abundant light and love within us
until we find ourselves warmly satisfied, content with your grace alone…
(silent prayers of confession)
