WAYNE, NEW JERSEY
FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT
MARCH 10, 2019 10:00 A.M.
Welcome to the Preakness Reformed Church!
“As Christians, we must maintain day in and day out that peace is not something to be achieved by our power. Rather peace is a gift of God that comes only by our being a community formed around a crucified savior – a savior who teaches us how to be peaceful in a world in rebellion
against its true Lord.” – The Peaceable Kingdom by Stanley Hauerwas

- GOD CALLS US TO WORSHIP WITH ONE ANOTHER
For many of us, it was tempting to “sleep in” this morning.
But God has called us to this place, to hear God’s word, to open our hearts in prayer
and praise, and to seek direction for our lives.
There are many other temptations placed in front of us each day. But we are called to be strong and place our trust in God.
God is faithful to us, comforting us, guiding us, and lifting us up. AMEN.
- OPENING HYMN 527 Come Away from Rush and Hurry PROMISE
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy Lord, as we enter this Lenten season, we are reminded of our weaknesses and our need for your strength. We ask for your forgiveness when we give in to the temptations of this world, when we tread paths that are contrary to your will. Remind us of the sacrifice and commitment that we need to make for this journey. Enable us to enter into this time of learning and testing with courage and faith…

SONG OF CONFESSION Lord, I Need You
-by Christy Nockels, Daniel Carson, Jesse Reeves, Kristian Stanfill, Matt Maher
Lord, I come, I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
And without You I fall apart
You're the one that guides my heart
Lord I need You, oh I need You
Ev'ry hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You

- THE BELHAR CONFESSION: Article 4 - Dutch Reformed Mission Church South Africa,1986
-Adopted by the Reformed Church in America, 2010
We believe, that God has revealed himself as the one who wishes to bring about justice and true peace among people; that God, in a world full of injustice and enmity, is in a special way the God of the destitute, the poor and the wronged.
We believe, that God calls the church to follow him in this, for God brings justice to the oppressed and gives bread to the hungry; that God frees the prisoner and restores sight to the blind; that God supports the downtrodden, protects the stranger, helps orphans and widows and blocks the path of the ungodly; that for God pure and undefiled religion is to visit the orphans and the widows in their suffering.
We believe, that God wishes to teach the church to do what is good and to seek the right, that the church must therefore stand by people in any form of suffering and need, which implies, among other things, that the church must witness against and strive against any form of injustice, so that justice may roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream!
We believe, that the church as the possession of God must stand where the Lord stands, namely against injustice and with the wronged; that in following Christ the church must witness against all the powerful and privileged who selfishly seek their own interests and thus control and harm others.
PRAYERS OF THANKSGIVING AND INTERCESSION ……concluding with the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
