THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT
March 4, 2018 10:00 A.M.
Welcome to the Preakness Reformed Church!
“The message that a convicted felon was the bearer of God’s forgiving and transforming love was hard enough for anybody to swallow and for some especially so. For Hellenized sophisticates – that Greeks, as Paul puts it – it could only seem absurd.”– Frederick Buechner

Guilt: Prayer of Confession
Lord God, forgive us when we cherish objects. Sometimes we revere objects and thingsalmost more that life itself. Then we are encouraged to throw away items because their value decreases so rapidly. Unfortunately, we far too often treat our relationships with each other in the same attitude. We enter relationships for what we can get, and when we feel we have gained all that we could, we discard the relationship.
Jesus came to teach us a new system of values, in which people and hope and faith are treasured. Forgive and heal us when we have treated each other with careless abandon. Turn our lives in a new direction in which following you and serving your world are our dearest treasures...
(silent prayers of confession)
GRACE: Words of Forgiveness
GRATITUDE: The Call of Discipleship
Let your love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in passion, be enthusiastic in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be arrogant but associate with the lowly; and do not claim to be wiser than you are.
