PREAKNESS REFORMED CHURCH

WAYNE, NEW JERSEY

ELEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

August 5, 2018    10:00 A.M.

Welcome to the Preakness Reformed Church!

“A prophet’s true greatness is the ability to hold God and humanity in a single thought.

(What) fills the prophets of Israel with dismay does not go beyond that which we regard as normal,

as typical ingredients of social dynamics.

To us a single act of injustice—cheating in business, exploitation of the poor—is slight;

 to the prophets, a disaster.

To us injustice is injurious to the welfare of the people; to the prophets it is a deathblow to existence:

to us, an episode; to them, a catastrophe, a threat to the world.”

– Abraham Joshua Heschel, The Prophets

  • Call TO WORSHIP

The prophet Isaiah appealed to God’s people long ago.

Isaiah invites us: “Come, all you who are thirsty,

come drink from the waters of life!

You who have no money, come, buy and eat!

Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

Why spend our money on things that will not nourish us?

Why work for things that will leave us unsatisfied?

Listen, listen to God, and eat what is good,

Come to God – we will be richly fed!

We have come seeking the LORD while we may be found,

We want to call on God while God is near.

Let us be attentive to God that we may live.”                                     Isaiah 55:1-5

  • OPENING HYMN OF PRAISE 284 God is Known Among His People LAUDA ANIMA
  • salutation

 Prayer OF CONFESSION

God who abides with us in our waking and in our sleeping,

we have not always lived in ways that reflect your love for all.

There are times when prejudice and ignorance have caused us to judge others

as less important, less capable, less whole than ourselves.

God of relentless mercy, release us, and grant us mercy.

We have not always lived as people of the Resurrection.

There are times when we have seen the world

only as a place of threat and brokenness, forgetting Your creative genius.

God of angel armies, release us and grant us courage.

In quietness, let us remember any thoughts, words, or actions that

have marred or distorted your image in us, hurt others, and damaged the world.

                                  Silence for individual confession…

Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,

And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,

forever. Amen.
