PREAKNESS REFORMED CHURCH

WAYNE, NEW JERSEY

TENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

July 29, 2018    10:00 A.M.

Welcome to the Preakness Reformed Church!

“Wisdom summons human beings - all of them! - to “learn prudence, acquire intelligence”- that is, pay attention! The teaching of wisdom concerns respect for the poor, the importance of generative work, the danger of careless speech, the risk of unpayable debt, the hazard of having the wrong kind of friends. These very specific forms conduct will diminish the wellbeing of the community, whereas good work, good speech, good friends, and respect for the poor - all the counsel of wisdom - will bring wellbeing to the community. Wisdom guarantees it! – Walter Brueggemann

  • Call TO WORSHIP

By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations.

Through understanding God set the heavens in place.

By holy knowledge the seas were separated,

and the clouds dropped their dew.                         Proverbs 3:19-20

Where were we when God determined earth’s measurements…

when the morning stars sang together

and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?          Job 38:5,7

For everything there is a season,

and a time for every matter under heaven…

God has made everything suitable for its own time.     Ecclesiastes 3:1,11

Come, now is the time to worship.

Now is the time to give our hearts to God

who delights in the praises of Christ’s people.

We come, just as we are before our God.                Craig and Dean Phillips

 Prayer OF CONFESSION

Gracious dedicated God,

we have not always lived as people assured of a place in your heart.

There are times when despair has been our refuge

and we have turned from your promises.

Open-hearted One, release us and grant us hope.

We have not always lived as disciples of Jesus.

There are times when the paths to riches and power seem more attractive

Than the longer roads of justice, peace, and tolerance.

God who searches our hearts, release us, and grant us wisdom.

In quietness, let us remember any thoughts, words, or actions that

have marred or distorted your image in us, hurt others, and damaged the world:

                          …silence for personal confession

(silent prayers of confession)
