Call TO WORSHIP

Let us bless the Lord at all times!

God’s praise will always be in our mouths!                                                      Psalm 34:1

Today, there are ancient churches and modern mega-churches praising God!

People in rural churches and small towns,

people in churches in commuter suburbs and bustling cities

living room Bible studies, monasteries, and retreat centers

join voices and hearts to praise the God.

And though their song may be beyond or beneath our hearing,

all the works of the Lord bless the God of all gods.

Let us join our voices with this great chorus of praise!

Let all that is within us bless God’s holy name!

Prayer OF CONFESSION

Transformer of hearts,

when we want to be a church ever-reforming, yet cling to comfortable ways;

Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on us!

When we want to honor your “still speaking voice”,

but are fearful of insights which challenge old assumptions, disturb our consciences:

Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on us!

When we want to live into Jesus’ dream of oneness,

but fail to listen to voices of difference or appreciate opposing perspectives:

Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on us!

God who is for us and not against us, grant us the vision to be a part of a

new reformation for the Church that will bring ever more joy and justice to

the world. Continue to gather us, the diverse lot of us, into Jesus’ vision and

dream that your faithful people may be one in you.

(continue with silent prayers of confession)

     WORDS OF FORGIVENESS

            Take heart, get up; Jesus is calling to us!

            We trust in the one who has guided the church for two millennia.

            Through Christ, God forgives us our failings;

            Holy Spirit continues to call us

            into a community of mutual love and forgiveness.

            Let us celebrate this mercy of God

            by greeting each other with a sign of Christ’s peace.

The Peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you!

(Please greet one another with the peace of Christ.)

                                                                                   Text by W. Kethe

All people that on earth do dwell

Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;

Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell,

Come ye before him and rejoice.

The Lord, ye know, is God indeed,

Without our aid he did us make;

We are his folk, he doth us feed,

And for his sheep he doth us take.

O enter then his gates with praise,

Approach with joy his courts unto;

Praise, laud, and bless his name always,

For it is seemly so to do.

For why? The Lord our God is good;

His mercy is forever sure;

His truth at all times firmly stood,

And shall from age to age endure.

Interlude

To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,

The God whom heav'n and earth adore,

From men and from the angelhost

Be praise and glory evermore.

Interlude

Amen

      COMMUNITY CONCERNS: The Church

      Introduction

BELHAR CONFESSION

We believe that God, in a world full of injustice and enmity, is in a special way the God of the destitute, the poor and the wronged; that God calls the church to follow him in this, for God brings justice to the oppressed and gives bread to the hungry;

We believe that God has entrusted the church with the message of reconciliation in and through Jesus Christ, that the church is called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world…God wishes to teach the church to do what is good and to seek the right…

     that the church must therefore stand by people in any form of suffering and need…

that the church as the possession of God must stand where the Lord stands, namely against injustice and with the wronged; that in following Christ the church must witness against all the powerful and privileged who selfishly seek their own interests and thus control and harm others.

God gathers, protects and cares for the church through Word and Spirit.  This, God has done since the beginning of the world and will do to the end.

  Prayers OF THE PEOPLE    …concluding with “Sweet are the Prayers of a Friend”

                                                                    (Quintet Singing)

Sweet are the prayers of a friend.

How sweet are the prayers that are offered up by a friend,

By a friend who calls, calling up to heav'n,

Calling, "Lord, come down, come down and bless again."

Friends pray for healing; they pray revealing the heavy burdens of our souls.

They pray for courage, unfailing courage, asking God to make us whole.

Friends pray us through troubles, through all our struggles when life seems to fall apart.

They pray us through grieving, always believing, Our God can heal the broken heart.

How sweet are the prayers that are offered up by a friend,

By a friend who calls, calling up to heav'n,

Calling, "Lord, come down, come down and bless again."

Sweet are the prayers of a friend for a friend.
